Frequently Asked Questions
about Classical Education

What is Classical Education?

Classical education is a method of teaching and learning that takes a holistic approach to education, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking, the study of classic literature, history, and philosophy, and the development of moral character.

How does classical education differ from modern education?

Modern education primarily focuses on what to learn, while classical education focuses on teaching students “how to learn”.

Classical education follows neurological and natural development stages of life.

In early eduction, the mind must first be given facts (*like how a young child memorizes their ABC’s before she knows what any of it means). Then in later school years, students are provided with the means to think logically about those facts (*like understanding how letters create established words). Finally in the last stages of education, the student is supplied with the tools to express their own thoughts and conclusions about the information they have learned (*like using words to create unique sentences that express the student’s independent thoughts).

How does Blue Ridge Pre-K implement classical tools for learning?

Each day during Blue Ridge Pre-K’s 30 minute curriculum time, the core academic disciplines of classical education will be the focus. These are history/geography, literature mathematics, and science.

Fine arts is an important part of classical education, therefore 30 minutes of each day is dedicated to art and music time.

Character development is incorporated in every aspect of our program. Students at Blue Ridge Pre-K will develop intellectual virtues, such as understanding craftsmanship through our daily 30 minute interactive STEM time.

Students will also engage in moral virtues, such as courage during our daily student presentation time.

Can a student with a classical education background easily transition into a school that uses a modern approach?

We believe classical education is a time-tested and proven method for learning, but we know it is not the only option. The classical education experience at Blue Ridge Pre-K is equipped to prepare each student for success in any and all educational experiences that they will progress on toward. Regardless of what method of education they engage with later on in life, we know the classical method teaches students “how to learn”, and therefore these student will be prepared to develop and succeed academically, emotionally, and socially.

Is Blue Ridge Pre-K’s classical education model “Christian” or religiously inclined?

Blue Ridge Pre-K believes religion is best fostered and developed within the family unit. Therefore we do not have any religious affiliation or adhere to a faith based curriculum.

A syllabus outlining the educational topics are provided for parental review.
